After years of rumors and speculation, British star driver Lewis Hamilton will leave the Mercedes F1 team after the 2024 season ends. Hamilton decided to join Ferrari for the 2025 F1 season and will replace Carlos Sainz Jr. This news shocked the F1 world, as Hamilton already signed a two-year deal with the Mercedes Petronas AMG F1 team that will expire at the end of the 2025 season, but it seems Lewis will stay only a year and make a multi-year contract deal with the Italian manufacturer.
The rumors revolving around the retirement of Hamilton were outshined over 10 months ago, and he signed his seat for the Silver Arrows for the upcoming season. Hamilton and Mercedes Principal Toto Wolff joined the team in 2013, and from that season on, they have won every season except the controversial 2021 season. With Mercedes, the Brit has won six Driver’s Championship titles, and Mercedes has won eight Constructor’s titles in F1 history. Both Wolff and Hamilton made Mercedes the most successful F1 team of all time.
39 years old, Hamilton won 103 races with the team, making the most successful career in F1 history. Hamilton has won 82 Grand Prix since joining the squad back in 2013. With news regarding his future, Hamilton breaks down the silence by stating that he has decided to leave the team and is looking for a formal conversation with the prancing horse.

Lewis Hamilton and Toto Wolff will duet for the last time in F1 2024 season

Toto Wolff confirms that Hamilton has made his decision, and we will move apart after the season ends. Mercedes F1 CEO and Team Principal Toto Wolff has had immense success both on and off the track. Wolff joined the team back in 2013 after Jean Todtt left as team principal. He said that this move by Hamilton not only shocks F1 fans but also him. After 11 long years of successive sporting dignity, the duet will finally end after the 2024 season.
According to the GPBlog, Wolff said, “Our relationship with Lewis has become the most successful the sport has seen, and that’s something we can look back on with pride; Lewis will always be an important part of Mercedes motorsport history. “However, we knew our partnership would come to a natural end at some point, and that day has now come. We accept Lewis’s decision to seek a fresh challenge, and our opportunities for the future are exciting to contemplate. But for now, we still have one season to go, and we are focused on racing to deliver a strong 2024.”
Wolff has seen Hamilton win since they joined together. Both have made the team one of the most successful F1 teams of the hybrid era. The 52-year-old Toto stated that even if Lewis ends his contract with the team, it will not have any effects on our bonding and trust. Hamilton and Wolff have professionally dominated the partnership in the hybrid era and have gained fierce dominance over their competitor, Red Bull. Hamilton has not won a Grand Prix since the Saudi Arabian GP in 2021.
During the interview on Thursday, Hamilton stated that Wolff was surprised a bit by his decision. He later added that they have had tremendous success. “We shared the opinion when we decided to sign a short-term contract that there may be opportunities for him and us. “Maybe one consideration was the opportunity to sign a longer-term contract with Ferrari and give it a really big go at the end of his career.
