Maruti Suzuki is a name that throbs in the hearts of every Indian family. A name that you can trust. It’s not just a brand; it’s a dream of millions. The journey of Maruti Suzuki was something that we gearheads can describe as the road not taken. Who knows? With its simple ideology, this brand would become one of the most successful brands in Indian automotive history.
With a passion for cars, famous politician Sanjay Gandhi subsequently initiated the dream project of owning a car with an Indian name behind it. Thus, Maruti Motors Limited was formed. However, when the Japanese brand Suzuki tied up with Maruti, it was renamed Maruti Udyog Limited, and the rest is history. So here’s everything you need to know about the history of Maruti Suzuki.
Establishment of Maruti Suzuki
Maruti Suzuki is not only an automotive company but it was a symphony to boast a rich history with our nation’s economic growth. This brand acted as a humble beginning to meet the nation’s need for mobility. In the early 1980s, this company started to make a simple car for Indian-oriented customers. After the sudden death of Sanjay Gandhi, the Indian government started to initiate the idea of owning an Indian car brand. This negotiation came to a close with Suzuki in April 1982. Suzuki Motor Corporation and Maruti Udyog Limited signed a license and joint venture agreement to form a new automotive company known as Maruti Suzuki.
After a year of successful operations, the joint venture between Maruti and Suzuki was expanding due to the growing industrial workforce. The first industrial plant was established on 12,000 acres of land in Gurugram, with another plant initially set up in Manesar. The Indian government predominantly owned the automotive plant, with Suzuki initially holding a 26% stake in 1982. Over the next two years, Suzuki increased its stake to 46%, eventually acquiring the remaining shares in 2007.
In December 1983, Suzuki proposed the introduction of a small, budget-oriented car for Indian customers that was based on the SS30/SS40 Suzuki Fronte and Suzuki Alto platforms. This car was based on the infamous Japanese Kie-Car concept and thus the nation was introduced with the birth of the legendary Maruti Suzuki 800.
Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) & Maruti 800
With a 50% stake in Maruti Suzuki Udyog Limited, the company was once again revamped but this time with a new name that still exists. Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) was positioned as a subsidiary of Maruti Motor Udyog and Suzuki Motor Corporation. With the reimbursement as India’s largest passenger automotive brand, MSIL will have 45% of the total automotive market share in 2024. MSIL growth has outclassed other automotive brands with a record growth rate of 8.4%. With 30 models and over 44 years of reputation, Maruti Suzuki is one of the most popular automotive brands in India.
Mastering the art of diversifying the needs
Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) did not stop with the iconic Maruti 800. The brand understood that the customer needed a budget-oriented car with multiple driving dynamics and designs. So they diversified the portfolio and offered one of the best drives to Indian customers. Some of the most sophisticated cars from the 1990s–2000s were produced under the name Maruti Suzuki.
