Alfa Romeo Revs Into WEC After Leaving F1 In 2023

Alfa Romeo has been the title sponsor of the Swiss-based engineering manufacturing unit Sauber Engineering. They have been backing up Sauber’s F1 team by sponsoring the racing brand since 2019. After six years in Formula 1, the organization decided to quit F1 in 2023 and look for new opportunities in motorsport racing.

The Italian manufacturer’s title sponsorship came to an end with Sauber’s F1 team at last weekend’s season finale race which was held at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. With this Alfa Romeo’s long and curated chapter in the history of Formula 1 has been closed forever. This Italian king has alone won both titles as a constructor and an engine supplier in the 1950 and 1951 F1 Championship with Guiseppe Farina and Juan Manuel Fangio behind the wheel respectively.

Alfa Romeo F1 Exits

After a curative succession in Formula 1 racing, Alfa Romeo left F1 for the 1980s championship season and returned to the racing but not as a team but now as an engine supplier. In 1993, Alfa Romeo acquired small stakes in Sauber’s racing team as the team was struggling hard in racing. However, Sauber’s magnificent engineering assets and Alfa Romeo’s strong financial support helped the team and left space for improvement in the future.

Alfa Romeo shifting gears to WEC Racing

According to the latest news, Alfa Romeo CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato decided that after leaving F1 in 2023 the company wants to explore different racing fields. Looking forward to it the brand decided to race in the World Endurance Championship. Although Alfa Romeo last won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1934 they are still waiting for another automotive brand for a collaboration in WEC. The CEO said WEC made the best option for the brand as endurance championship racing has seen a surge in terms of popularity in recent years.

Many big automotive giants like Audi, Toyota, Porsche, and Ferrari have been racing into WEC for decades. So competition with such brands will be very sophisticated in looking while fighting on the tracks rather than F1 as F1 racing is more focussed on the constructor’s championship than on racing for individual teams. Thus, the WEC rules also allow freedom in the car’s development program which could showcase the technical opportunity for the Italian brand in racing.

Alfa Romeo Wants To Join WEC

However, Alfa Romeo does not make GT3 cars and in WEC only GT3 cars are raced on the tracks. So the brand is still looking forward to collaborating with the existing or new racing team for the 2024 FIA WEC racing. If the brand gets its hands in the endurance championship then it will be the new chapter in the Alfa Romeo motorsport legacy.
